Bentonite is a very fine grain clay (colloidal). The particle size is probably less than 0.03% than the average kaolinite grain.
The most normal type is calcium. Sodium swells when it comes in contact with water. The iron it contains always gives it color, although there is also a white bentonite. This type will give a better color in reduction than in oxidation when used in porcelain bodies. There are several types of bentonite that vary both in plasticity and hardness. There are a few, such as the land of batán, which totally lack plasticity.
